Shoreline Restoration

JRA is working under two grants, one from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the other from the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership to restore approximately 1,900 linear feet of eroded shoreline at Ducking Stool Point in Charles City County, VA. The purpose of the restoration is to protect over 500 acres of pristine, tidal freshwater marsh, located at the mouth of Herring Creek. Largely due to erosive wave action from large watercraft and barge traffic, Ducking Stool Point has eroded at an alarming rate.

Prior attempts to stabilize the shoreline with vegetation have been unsuccessful, however, JRA is partnering with VHB, Inc., Coastal Design and Construction, and Vulcan, Inc. to develop and install components of a “living shoreline” to protect nesting sites for Bald Eagles, habitat for anadromous fish and to prevent further loss of marshland.
