James Riverkeeper Programs

JRA is also working to develop a plan to restore the legendary sturgeon population in the James River in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Together, they convened the “Sturgeon Summit” which includes sturgeon experts from federal and state agencies and commercial watermen, and is working on a restoration plan.

In cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and Old Dominion University, the algae levels in the James River are being closely monitored, collected, and identified. This is an effort to effectively combat the severe algae problems in the James that stem from excessive amounts of nutrients being added to the water.

The Riverkeeper is also working with Longwood University and citizens living along the Willis River in Buckingham and Cumberland Counties to develop and implement a plan to address bacteria pollution.
