Volunteer Center

Tree PlantingVolunteers help us reach our mission to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of the James River and its natural resources. There are many different opportunities for you to explore. Whether it’s getting your hands dirty with one of our watershed restoration projects, lending a hand to our education program, giving a voice to the river through our advocacy efforts, or helping our staff with office tasks, there is a place for everyone to play a part in making a cleaner James River!

Check our calendar for upcoming volunteering events and training sessions.

Invasive Species Removal: Assist JRA with removing invasive species from local parks and natural areas.
Garden Maintenance: Join us in maintaining many of the rain gardens, buffer plantings, and other projects that JRA has previously installed. This includes weeding, replanting, mulching, and other annual maintenance needs.

Assist with Classroom Presentations: If you enjoy working with students, join our staff at local schools. Present environmental education lessons such as the EnviroScape, a tool used to help students understand pollution and how to prevent it.
Capture Photos, Videos, and Information: Join JRA at one of our events to take photos and videos.

Send a Letter: Take a look at current issues affecting the health of the James River and send a letter to your local representative.

Video/Movie Making: Create videos of our special events, educational workshops, and outreach efforts.
Fairs/Festivals: Represent JRA at local events by helping hand out information and being there to answer questions.

• RiverRats: This program engages volunteers to get out on the water and patrol the James River and to take action in their community. A scientific background is not required.

• Water Quality Monitoring: Collect water samples and record data to track the environmental health of the James. Sampling will occur weekly from May to September, and data will be made available to the public on JRA's James River Watch website (thejamesriver.org/jrw).
