Education & Outreach

JRA’s Education and Outreach program is educating the next generation of James River stewards and spreading the message of JRA. We strives to work with adults and youth throughout the watershed to encourage an awareness of the wonders in their backyard, and to give them an appreciation for the impact the James has on our lives.

JRA’s major education initiative is the “James River Watershed Experience.” This is a program that is implemented through a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University that is based on the goals of the Chesapeake Bay 2000 Agreement which states that every child should have at least one “meaningful watershed experience” by the time they graduate from high school. Our program targets 6th and 7th grade students and educators within the watershed and provides water quality education training and programs which meet the State of Virginia’s Standards of Learning.

JRA staff also participates in dozens of outreach events for young and old throughout the year, including the James River Days and the Annual James River Clean-up, and educational programs for groups at the Children’s Museum of Richmond, Boy and Girl Scout troops, garden clubs, and various other organizations.

If your group or organization would like someone to speak about the James River, please contact Heather Murdoch at (804) 730-2898 ext. 205.
